Soon after the Salvation's Edge raid race finished, players got access to the eighth and last The Final Shape campaign mission. Being a satisfying conclusion to the Light and Darkness saga many fans are wondering the same thing: is Destiny 2 ending?

It's not surprising that fans are curious about the future of the saga amid a big period of uncertainty following layoffs and internal restructuring that saw Bungie lose 29% of its workforce and reports suggesting that Destiny 3 was never in the cards for the developers.

On top of that, Bungie is splitting resources between its looter shooter franchise and the upcoming Marathon reboot. Overall, the future of Destiny is definitely a mysterious one.

But what if there's no future at all? Well, worry not, as we'll answer whether Destiny 2 is ending or not, with some good news in case you were hoping the FPS continues to live on.

Is Destiny 2 ending?

The short answer is no, Bungie is not abandoning Destiny 2 after The Final Shape. Will we get more expansions? That's harder to figure out. However, according to reports, that will no longer be the case.

Destiny 2 will continue to live on

Bungie's short term plans involve supporting Destiny 2 with a brand-new episodic format that kicked off with Episode: Echoes.

Furthermore, while the battle against The Witness resolves during The Final Shape, there are several loose ends left dangling that could serve as motivation for future content.

Sadly, among the laid-off employees was senior narrative designer Robert Brookes. This may hint at the rumored decision that storytelling will no longer play a pivotal role in future DLC content and seasonal stories.

When is the next Destiny 2 expansion?

As mentioned, there's no information about any upcoming expansions. However, rumors suggest that Bungie is done with big The Final Shape-like content, opting for more scaled-back content they are internally referred to as "content packs."

Content packs will include two small DLCs per year accompanied by two six-month seasons each year. Bungie teased the future of Destiny 2, titled Codename: Frontiers, which could be the first of this new wave of DLC.

Furthermore, according to Bungie employees, The Final Shape did not perform as well as Lightfall in terms of sales despite being the highest rated. This could be another nail in the coffin for any hopes of a proper Destiny 2 expansion to follow The Final Shape.
