Despite what many believed, The Final Shape is far from the end for Destiny 2 as a franchise, with Bungie revealing Codename Frontiers, a mysterious seemingly working title for the future of the franchise.
Announced during The Journey Ahead stream that aired on June 10, Bungie revealed the immediate future, consisting of three new Episodes to replace the seasonal format and Codename Frontiers.
While the near future of the franchise looks eerily similar to what the seasonal content offered, with season passes to grind, new activities per Episode, an ongoing storyline that will unravel some of the mysteries that still need resolving following The Final Shape's conclusion, Codename Frontiers is being hyped up as the next big evolution of Destiny 2.
Players have often wondered when the Vanguard and its Guardians will venture beyond the known confines of the Sol System. This system includes well-known planets such as Mars, Mercury, and Neptune, along with their moons, as well as unique landmarks like The Reef.
Now that the Light and Darkness saga is resolved in The Final Shape, there's no better time to explore beyond the confounds of the Sol System, especially taking into consideration that the latest expansion gave fans hints at the true nature of the Traveler and the people behind its existence, with answers potentially set to be found in uncharted territory.
One final thing worth mentioning is that Bungie did make it clear that Destiny 2 was, in fact, not turning into a rumored Destiny 3, as Codename Frontiers is marked as a D2 piece of content. Whether that's an expansion, or something else, remains to be seen.
