Destiny 2 community wants a "complete restart" of the franchise following disappointing episodic format

Is Destiny 3 really the answer?

Destiny 2 fans were initially excited to see what the future of the FPS game looked like after a strong conclusion to the Light and Darkness saga with The Final Shape. However, over a month since the expansion was released, the slow release of new content in the debuting episodic format has left a massive portion of the community wanting a fresh start.

The start of Episode: Echoes Act 2 may have brought new weapons, such as the Aberrant Action sidearm or the Corrasion pulse rifle, as well as the continuation of the post-Final Shape storyline. It also continued an annoying trend with Destiny 2 content drops that persist despite the shift to episodic format: time-gating content.

Players trying to get god rolls for the new weapons in Act 2 are currently unable to access focus decoding because of the incomplete story quest A Rising Chorus: Act II. Bungie has confirmed that decoding is unlocked by progressing through this quest, but the feature can't be accessed yet as the quest is being released gradually with each weekly reset.

This has, understandably, sparked the debate of whether Bungie should start from scratch with a hypothetical Destiny 3 and completely wipe everyone's progress similar to how Destiny 2 neglected everything its predecessor had to offer, for better or worse.

Prominent Destiny 2 content creator and streamer Gladd criticized episodes, calling them "renamed season," adding that the only way Bungie would be able to deliver exciting new updates is by completely ditching the current game in favor of a Destiny 3 reboot of sorts.

Despite being a scorching hot take, a surprising amount of players agree with Gladd, pointing out the fact that Act 2 didn't bring enough content to the table with hardcore veterans completing the new quests in mere hours.

Another huge portion of the fanbase is completely against Bungie potentially taking such a radical decision, pointing to vanilla Destiny 2, remembered as one of the lowest points in the entire franchise as it ditched a lot of core features that had made the original so enjoyable, including random rolls on weapons and a simplified approach to buildcrafting that made the game feel slower in comparison

Bungie is actively listening to these complaints, though, as they've already confirmed subsequent episodes won't have time-gated story quests, giving players the option to complete the seasonal quests at their leisure.

Unfortunately, the secrecy surrounding the future of Destiny 2 only adds to the uncertainty. However, players remain hopeful that Codename Frontiers is not just an update to maintain content flow on a smaller scale, but rather a significant expansion that will take Guardians beyond the familiar boundaries of the Solar System.
