After all the original release of the System Shock remake for Windows had several delays and missed many launch dates before finally dropping in 2023. The remake sits at a current 78 score on Metacritic earning itself the "generally favorable" tag on the aggregate review site.
For those unfamiliar with the 1994 original or the remake of System Shock, the game is a first-person cyberpunk adventure set in a dystopian future. You play as an unnamed hacker who has awoken from a coma after being caught attempting to access files concerning Citadel Station. After waking, it turns out the entire station has been taken over by SHODAN, a rogue AI that has had its ethical constraints removed.
The highly popular Bioshock franchise by Irrational Games began its life as a spiritual successor to the System Shock games. Fans often compare the two, calling System Shock a 'Bioshock in space'. However, no direct narrative connection between the two has been confirmed; many assume the games take place in the same universe.
