As anticipation continues to build for the future of Destiny 2, Bungie revealed what the new Commander Zavala voiced by Keith David will sound like during The Final Shape expansion and beyond.
The 9-minute ViDoc titled "Becoming Legend - Confronting Oblivion," has our first glimpses of Keith David's taking up Lance Reddick's mantle. Fans will be pleased as he maintains that level of stoicism and calmness that characterizes Zavala.
The first line we hear David deliver is: "I used to think I'd give anything to bring you back," it seems that Commander Zavala will have a moment of heavy introspection after reuniting with fellow Vanguard leader Cayde-6.
The Final Shape is going to be an emotional journey for long-time veteran fans of the series for a plethora of reasons, including the fact that this will be the first time in franchise history were Commander Zavala will no longer be voiced by the late Lance Reddick, who was been part of the journey since the original Destiny released in 2014.
Reddick was more than just the voice of Zavala. He was an active and beloved member of the Destiny 2 community, constantly interacting with fans on social media and showcasing his own adventures in the game, with fans enjoying the irony of Lance himself being a Warlock main despite voicing the leader of the Vanguard, a Titan.
Sadly, Reddick suddenly passed away in March 2023. Bungie delivered a heartwarming message paying tribute to the actor, and Destiny 2 fans honored him in-game in an act that is becoming a tradition as Reddick received more tributes on the anniversary of his passing this year.
Bungie announced the recasting of Commander Zavala in August 2023, with Keith David that he wished to build upon Reddick's legacy by continuing to portray Zavala's "sense of integrity so wonderfully."
Fans will get to fully experience Keith David's performance as Zavala when The Final Shape drops on June 4. If you want to be ready, we recommend you check out every weapon buff and nerf coming to Destiny 2 with the expansion.
