Destiny 2: How to unlock the Dual Destiny mission

A mysterious new exotic quest has arrived

Destiny 2 players have stumbled upon a unique exotic mission in the Pale Heart called Dual Destiny, which will let them unlock the brand-new exotic class items as well as the ability to farm new rolls more consistently.

The mission itself is quite challenging, however, unlocking it alone has proven to be a conundrum in its own right. After all, Bungie wanted this expansion to feel like the culmination of everything they've built these past 10 years and they've pulled out all the stops.

So, if you want to know how to unlock the Dual Destiny exotic mission in Destiny 2, here's a complete step-by-step guide. While you're here, consider checking out our Wild Card exotic quest guide as well, completing it will reward you with the Still Hunt exotic sniper rifle.

Dual Destiny: How to unlock exotic Destiny 2 mission

A key important thing that many people aren't noticing is that you need to have completed two of the Micah-10 quests:

  • Alone in the Dark
  • Lost in the Light

Since a lot of expert Guardians already compelted these while trying to unlock the mission, some of the newcomers who may have skipped this content aren't seeing the Lucent Hive bosses after the Overthrow completions.

While the Dual Destiny mission requires you to play with someone else in a fireteam, this section can be completed entirely solo. To unlock the mission, you need to fully complete Overthrow activities in the Pale Heart, The Final Shape's new explorable location.

Specifically, in the following areas:

  • The Landing
  • The Blooming
  • The Impasse

Now, do keep in mind this doesn't mean completing a single level of Overthrow, you must complete all the encounters.

Furthermore, we've attempted to do this in different completion orders and we only found luck if you finish Overthrows going from left to right, which means you need to do The Landing first, move to The Blooming, and end at The Impasse. This is unconfirmed but better safe than sorry.

After you complete each Overthrow event, instead of receiving messages from Zavala, Ikora, and the Crow, Savathun will contact you, teasing you about your fruitless efforts to defend the Traveler as she sends Lucent Hive to your location.

At this point, you'll have five minutes to find and defeat the boss before proceeding to the next area. We've marked down the approximate location of each boss below:

After defeating the three bosses go back to The Blooming and make your way to The Refraction, which is the small area that connects The Blooming with The Landing.

Once you get deep into The Refraction you'll be given the Savathun's Envoy buff when you enter a crystallized room, then, two orbs will spawn around the area, these will be marked so head to their locations, clear out the enemies, and bring back the orbs back to where you got the buff.

One orb will be Dark and the other Light, don't worry about dunking them in the wrong pillar, the game will mark you exactly where to put them.

And that's it. If you need more help with Destiny 2 content, check out where to find the Well of Echoes and start the Enigma Protocol mission.
