The May 30 State of Play dedicated a huge chunk of its runtime to Concord, a brand-new PvP hero shooter that takes heavy inspiration from Overwatch, Guardians of the Galaxy, and even fighting games releasing on August 23.
Concord, developed by Firewalk Studios, a studio founded in 2018 by ex-Bungie employees, was initially revealed back in early 2023 with a small teaser trailer and the confirmation the game was going to be a PvP shooter.
During the State of Play, Firewalk unveiled a brand-new CGI trailer to showcase the world of Concord, a futuristic, colorful, world with snarky characters and over-the-top attempted escapes that are immediately reminiscent of the Guardians of the Galaxy dynamics, especially if you're familiar with Eidos Montreal's 2021 title.
Following the five-minute CGI trailer, gameplay footage was shown, revealing a vast cast of characters. The influence and experience working on Destiny 2 clearly shows. Lennox has throwable knifes similar to Destiny's Hunter class and the style in which he uses hand cannons is eerily similar to D2's shooting and reloading animations.
In a follow-up blog post on Sony's website, Firewalk Studios confirmed Concord will feature 16 playable characters at launch with subsequent updates bringing free content in the form of more Freegunners, maps, modes, cinematic vignettes, and more.
Furthermore, Concord, while being a 5v5 PvP experience, will have constant story updates, with new cutscenes and character interactions added each week during release. Again, Firewalk devs seem to be taking cues from their experience working on seasonal weekly content with Destiny 2.
It does seem the game will put extra emphasis on abilities rather than raw aiming, as game director Ryan Ellis mentioned both fighting and strategy games as big inspirations for Concord's gameplay loop, which will likely revolve around cooldown management to make individual clutch plays and cohesive teamwork to eventually achieve victory.
If you're interested in Concord, there will be a beta ahead of release, with the FPS launching on both PC and PS5. And yes, if you're planning on playing via PC, you'll need a PSN account.
