Only ten days after the release of Overwatch 2 Season 13, fans are already looking forward to the game's upcoming season after Blizzard's Director's Take was published on October 25.
After opening the door to the return of the 6v6 format on July 25, the team's most recent announcement has revealed that Blizzard will hold two 6v6 tests during Overwatch 2 Season 14.
The team has been exploring our vision and development for these tests, and we’re happy to announce we will be running two different 6v6 tests in Season 14.
According to Aaron Keller, the first 6v6 test will be launched one week into the season and it will be a variation of the Open Queue. It will look slightly different from the standard 2-2-2 role-queued from Overwatch to avoid "running into the same problems we had previously." Instead, teams will have to include at least one of each role and a maximum of three. The team is internally referring to this rule as “Min 1, Max 3.”
The idea behind this addition is to see how players can build combinations that have never been seen before in Overwatch 2. It's also worth mentioning that players will be able to switch their roles as long as the “Min 1, Max 3" rule isn't broken.
The second 6v6 test will be during the Season 14 midcycle and will be the classic 2-2-2 composition while incorporating "some new principles we introduced with Overwatch 2 (like less CC and hero reworks)."
Finally, the blog post included an insight into how the introduction of 6v6 tests to Overwatch 2 Season 14 will affect other game modes and the game itself:
The 6v6 tests will have their own card in Unranked alongside other modes, and they will not take the place of other types of game modes like seasonal events or Quick Play: Hacked. We’ll also be implementing a series of balance changes that will apply to these two test modes only. The power and survivability of tanks will go down in these 6v6 formats, and we’ll be taking a look at whether we need many of the passives that we’ve added in Overwatch 2.
Despite Blizzard re-introducing 6v6 playlists soon, it's still difficult to say if they will stay in the game forever. According to the Director's Take, it will depend on the players: if they join the mode and constantly play it, the team will have the "signal we need to do more with it."
In other words, if the 6v6 tests gather a large number of players, the community should expect its full return to the game in upcoming seasons. Therefore, we encourage you to try out the 6v6 playlist as soon as it comes out in Season 14.
