R6 SOLIDÁRIO - 25 Pros Compete in Coronavirus Charity Tournament

This weekend the Brazilian caster of Meligeni will host a Coronavirus charity tournament with all donations going to the "Instituto Anjinho Feliz" and their campaign to "help families who are without food or materials of hygiene and cleanliness in this period of social isolation".

The Teams

32 players were randomly seeded into the 8 teams captained by eight well-known Brazilian streamers creating the following lineups:

Team Lagonis - Lagonis, Miracle, Muringa, Pino and Russa

Headed by the Black Dragons Pro League player of Lagonis who has over 90,000 Twitch followers, this team also includes the Team Liquid player and BR6 2019 MVP of Muringa, the SI20 grand-final MVP of Pino from Ninjas in Pyjamas, the soon-to-be Pro League player for FURIA of Miracle and the Black Dragons Women's team player of Russa. 

Team Patife - Patife, xS3xyCake, Alem4o, Muzi and Silvermist

Led by the variety streamer and YouTuber of Patife who has over 2.4 million subscribers on the platform, this team also includes a Team Liquid player in xS3xyCake, a Ninjas in Pyjamas player of Muzi, the INTZ player of Alem4o -- who himself has over 30,000 Twitch followers -- and the Women's League player of Silvermist who attended a number of LAN events under the ReD DevilS e-Sports organisation.

Team Ique - Ique, Psycho, Julio, Silence and SenhoritaB

As one of the few teams with current Pro League teammates together in the Ninjas in Pyjamas players of Julio and Psycho, this lineup does on paper have a strong advantage, especially as it includes the ex-Pro League player and current coach of Team Liquid in Silence. Finishing off the lineup comes the R6 content creator and streamer of Ique and the Women's league player for Medusa Players of SenhoritaB.

Team TheDarkness - TheDarkness, Nesk, Yoona, BmH and Carolzinha

TheDarkness, a Brazilian streamer with almost half-a-million Twitch followers, leads the best known Brazilian player in the World in Nesk and FaZe Clan's top-performing player in Season 11 of Yoona into this tournament. Joining them comes the FURIA player of BmH and the fairly inexperienced Women's league player of Carolzinha.

Team Cherry - Cherrygumms, psk1, Paluh, Hornetao and Myss1

Three Black Dragons members in the organisation's co-owner in Cherrygumms, their Pro team's newest member in Hornetao and their Women's team's captain in Myss1 join up for the first time alongside two Team Liquid players of psk1 and Paluh in what on paper is one of the tournament's strongest lineups.

Team Kalera - Kalera, ion, Astro, Kamikaze and Shayy

The Twitch streamer of kalera joins the two FaZe Clan players of ion and Astro, one of the original NiP members of Kamikaze and the INTZ Women's team player of Shayy in this lineup just three days after their season-defining matchup between NiP and FaZe Clan in the Pro League.

Team LeoBianchi - Leo Bianchi, pzd, Hugzord, wag and Thaii

The Brazilian TV-host and esports Journalist of Leo Bianchi will join four Black Dragons players in the Pro League teammates of pzd, Hugzord and wag and a player for BD's Women's lineup in Thaii to form this lineup in which any inexperience Leo brings to the table will more than made up for in the chemistry between the three Pro-level teammates in the team.

Team YuuK - YuuK, fredQx, Bersa, igoorctg and Pome

Despite being led by the since retired ex-Pro League player for Team Liquid of YuuK, this team is by far the least experienced with it including the two Challenger League players for FURIA of fredQx and BERSA, INTZ's coach of igoorctg and the ex-bootkamp and INTZ Women's league player of Pome. 

These lineups, therefore, mean that six members of Team Liquid, five from Ninjas in Pyjamas, five from Black Dragons, three from FaZe Clan, two from INTZ and four from FURIA makes a total of 25 Pro League players taking part as well as the seven streamers and eight Women's League players (three being from BD's title-holding roster). 

The Schedule

The games are due to kick off at 2pm local time (7pm CEST / 1pm EDT) and will see a format somewhat similar to the Year 2 Pro League format with two groups of four teams playing in best-of-one map games with the top two in each group progressing to the semi-finals and then best-of-three map grand-finals. The groups and matchups will be as below:

• Group A - Team Lagonis, Team Patife, Team Ique and Team TheDarkness
• Group B - Team Cherry, Team YuuK, Team Kalera and Team Leo Bianchi

The games will be cast on Meligeni's Twitch account which each of the team captains listed above streaming their POV on their personal twitch accounts. The tournament will also see giveaways take place throughout the day to viewers on Meli's channel.

The Cause

The tournament is hoping to raise a total of R$50,000 (~$9,600/~€8,800) for the Brazilian charity "Instituto Anjinho Feliz" which aims to "welcome, guide and assist underprivileged children and their families" and more specifically to tackle the effects of the Coronavirus epidemic by "helping families who are without food or materials of hygiene and cleanliness in this period of social isolation". 

At the moment Brazil has over 35,000 confirmed cases and 2,200 deaths putting it as the 11th worst-hit country so far in terms of deaths, however, with major Brazilian cities having such a high percentage of the population living in favelas the virus will be particularly difficult to stamp out likely making it a much deadlier issue in South America than elsewhere. 

While this is the first tournament of it's kind to tackle the Coronavirus crisis, there have been many prior R6 charity tournaments, however, none of which with this level of talent involved.

Operation Awareness:

Ran by Rainbow6ANZ, just like the R6 Solidario tournament this invited 10 professional players and a number of streamers to compete to help raise money for Headspace, an Australian charity devoted to providing mental health support to 12-25-year-olds. The tournament successfully raised a total of AU$2130.47 (~$1,400) for the charity.

Twitch Rivals E3 Showdown

$50,000 was offered by Ubisoft as the prize to the charities of choice in a showmatch which followed Ubisoft's 2019 E3 panel. The game which was cast by Interro saw the rappers of T-Pain and Lil Yachty captain teams of streamers which included BikiniBodhi, AnneMunition, TheRussianBadger, Bnans and Lexi.

The game was eventually won by Team Pain who donated their $40,000 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital -- a charity focussed on combatting cancer and other life-threatening diseases in children -- while Team Yatchy donated their $10,000 to Girls Who Code -- a charity aimed at "closing the gender gap in technology" and getting more girls into engineering.

R6 Against Cancer:

The longest-running charity tournament so far is the R6 Against Cancer tournaments which last year ran its third season. The tournaments have raised over $4,300 for the charity “World Child Cancer” and have involved the teams of PENTA, Movistar Riders, Invicta Gaming, and GoSkilla (then known as NYYRIKKI Esports), all cast by Sternab.

Siege Day 2015 - Will Arnett vs Ben Schwartz

The weekend before the release of Rainbow Six: Siege, Ubisoft held a promotional day which invited a number of streamers and celebrities to try out the game. This culminated in a charity show match between two teams of streamers captained by Will Arnett of Bojack Horseman, Arrested Development, and Lego Batman fame, and Ben Schwartz is best known for playing Jean-Ralphio in Parks and Recreation. Will Arnett won the match and chose for the $10,000 prize pool to be donated to be Extra Life.

Extra Life is a charity which “unites thousands of gamers around the world to play games in support of their local Children's Miracle Network Hospital”. Salty Duels #3

64 streamers took part in teams of twos to help raise a total of €5,400 for the French gaming charity of Chœur de Gamers ("Gamer's Choir") which aims to promote community and educational gaming events. The tournament was eventually won by the British duo of LeonGids and TangyD who took home a separate €2k prize pool for themselves.

Iron Charity Cup

Ran two years ago, this tournament involved players such as Sua, Leonski, SlebbeN, Bounssi, and ProtaX, and was cast by a number of names including Sternab once again. The tournament helped raise another $516 for the Extra Life charity mentioned above and remains the only notable international 5v5 tournament in R6 history won by an all-British roster.

POWERHAUS Gaming - 2v2 Charity Tournament:

This tournament ran last year was cast by Stoax and Flynn and raised $1,400 towards the “Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund”, a charity focussed towards protecting, preserving, studying, and teaching people about Gorillas. The tournament was won by the duo of Lycan and Rampy from Spacestation Gaming, with the two players from the then Organised Chaos roster, Merc and Art, coming in second.
