It appears Microsoft is going back to the roots of the Halo franchise in an attempt to introduce it to more users.
A new report from TheVerge indicates that the company has greenlit a remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved, the first title in the series released in 2001. The project is apparently in the early stages of development and Microsoft is even considering releasing it on PlayStation.
Ever since Microsoft started to release some of its exclusives into other consoles, reports have flooded the internet indicating that the company is considering doing the same with its big franchises like Gears of War.
Since this is early days, an announcement is not expected to happen during this Sunday's Xbox Games Showcase, which will reportedly last around two hours and feature 30 games.
The report doesn't mention which Xbox studio is behind this remaster. It is believed that 343 Industries is working on a new Halo title after the community director, Brian Jarrard, stated on his X account (formerly Twitter) that the studio is staffing up for the "future of Halo".
However, we still don't know if the studio is developing a brand-new game, working on the remaster, or both. Now that support for Halo Infinite has practically ended, with only small updates promised for the rest of the year, they are certainly focused on what's next.
An updated version of the original game is available through the Master Chief Collection, which is currently the best way to enjoy the title. We will have to wait and see if this new project changes the original story and/or brings any significant new features besides modern graphics.
