Rainbow Six Siege X servers are back up one day after Ubisoft decided to temporarily shut them down due to a massive hack that hit the company.
As a consequence of the attack, Rainbow Six Siege X players that logged in on December 27 received billions of Renown and R6 Credits—the game's in-game currencies—allowing them to purchase any bundle from the in-game shop and other items listed in the Marketplace. It's said that the combined value of all the Renown and R6 Credits given ascends to USD$339,960,000,000,000.
The hack also saw players being gifted rare items as well as getting randomly banned for reasons including ToS breach, cheating, and more. Most of these bans were handed by the hackers.
Ubisoft took measures shortly after noticing the attack. First, Marketplace was temporarily closed. Then, Ubisoft decided to put Rainbow Six Siege X's servers down, stopping players from using the Renown and R6 Credits.
While initially it was thought this was just about Ubisoft and Rainbow Six Siege X, information circulating on social media indicated that this was way deeper than people believed. The hackers were able to hack the game due to a vulnerability found in MongoDB, the database used by Ubisoft. It's believed this issue could have impacted 87,000 companies.
Finally, after almost two days in the dark, Rainbow Six Siege X is back. Ubisoft have performed tests to make sure the solutions implemented are solid enough to keep the servers up. As indicated in Rainbow Six Siege X's post above, players who didn't log in during this period will not be affected by the changes. However, players who logged in during the hack could notice some of their previously owned items are missing. Ubisoft have already said that "investigations and corrections will continue over the next two weeks."
While Rainbow Six Siege X's servers are now back up, the Marketplace will remain closed. It's still unclear when it will open again.
