Here’s which APAC South teams can make it to the Berlin Major today

The APAC League in both the North and South Divisions is coming to a close, with just one and two play days remaining in each respective subregion. This means that the top teams are getting closer and closer to guaranteeing the top-two finishes they need to qualify for August’s Berlin Major.

With the penultimate play day in APAC South happening today, here’s a rundown on who can qualify this week, what they need, and how likely it is.

Elevate

Elevate could start booking taxis to their airport tomorrow if they win against last-placed Chiefs Esports Club. Even an overtime victory would put them on 14 points and with the head-to-head tiebreaker over the third and fourth-placed roster, they would be safe from a further challenge.

If they lose in overtime against the Chiefs, then things become more complicated for them to qualify. Knights vs. Dire Wolves needs to end in overtime (the victor doesn’t matter) and Invictus Gaming need to drop a point against FURY.

Finally, a straight loss in regulation time would not only be the Chiefs’ first three points of the stage, but would also mean Elevate will need to wait an extra week.

Gaimin Gladiators

The Indonesian roster, which only made its way up through the APAC South relegations six months ago, can also qualify for the Six Major in a very tight set of circumstances.

They need to win all three points against Wildcard, hope the Knights lose against Dire Wolves, and iG lose against FURY.

Any fewer points won by Gaimin and they’ll also need to wait an extra week.

The likelihood of qualifying?

Simply put, Elevate will very likely do it while Gaimin will probably have to wait.

Considering Chiefs haven’t had a clean victory all stage and lost two weeks ago in a 1-7 scoreline against the Knights, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to hold up an Elevate in hot form.

For Gaimin, while they will probably beat Wildcard, their issue comes with the fact their fate is in other teams' hands and that APAC South is so unpredictable that games can go any way.

The rest of the field

No other teams can qualify for the Major this week, but this is what they need to stay in contention for the final play day.

Starting from the bottom, even if FURY gets a straight win over iG, Gaimin needs just a win against Wildcard to end FURY’s chances completely. It’s much more likely that FURY will lose this game, which will end their hopes of visiting Berlin this year.

Onto Wildcard, they have a fair amount of power. If they beat Gaimin, the whole field just opened up and it will likely be a six-way race on the final day. If they lose, however, their stage is over.

Invictus also need to win their game against FURY without drama. If they do, they then have a more challenging game the following week against Dire Wolves and they must hope that both Knights and Gaimin are dropping points in their own games.

Finally, the Dire Wolves and Knights are in a unique position as they face off against each other. Assuming Elevate and Gaimin win their games, that means the loser of this match is also out. Considering Knights face Gaimin on the final play day, a win from there would likely set up a head-to-head match for the Berlin spot.
