Bungie has dropped a brand-new exotic quest in Destiny 2. Upon completion, you'll be granted the highly anticipated Barrow-Dyad exotic SMG, so it's one you don't want to miss out on.

With the start of Episode: Heresy, players are back in the Dreadnaught. It's a vastly different vessel from what it used to be, holding many secrets. One such secret is this exotic quest.

So, if you want to know how to find and complete the The Taken Path exotic quest. We got you covered.

How to get The Taken Path exotic quest

Getting the exotic quest can be a bit tricky. One thing you should note is that you do not need to have completed week 2 of the seasonal story quest. We got the exotic quest without doing this step.

For clarification, we progressed until step 13 which requires you to recover Skyburner data but did not complete it.

To find the quest, you need a Taken blight to spawn during the Nether activity. This is at random, so we recommend you search every area thoroughly.

Alternatively, taking a page from content creator Skarrow, load up the Nether until you spawn in the Hall of Souls area, as this is the easiest Taken blight to spot and the one we fortunately got.

Head over to the big section in the middle of the area and head over to the spot where you'll have to fight a Tormentor.

If you're lucky, the Taken blight should be visible right above.

Blight secured

Get close to the pillar and small platforms should start spawning, leading you to the blight. Once you get in contact with it, you'll be transported to a new area.

In this area, you'll find a plate on the ground and a rune with no symbol in front. Stand on the plate. You'll see a small message that reads: "something whispers to the right."

The plate point straight at the rune

Facing the rune, move to the right, don't turn around and walk forward, simply move right while facing forward and you'll be teleported to the other side of the room where you'll be able to collect the exotic item called "Taken Osseus Fragment."

Head over to Eris' apartment and talk to the slab to receive The Taken Path exotic quest.

Now the real fun begins

The Taken Path exotic quest steps

The quests consist of six steps in order. The reward, as mentioned, is the Barrow-Dyad SMG.

Step 1: Unlock and equip the Scotopic Rune

Simple enough, open up the Shaping Slab and in the Heretical Rituals Runich Enhancement submenu purchase and activate the Scotopic Rune enhancement.

It costs 150 Sigil Shards so save up to unlock it otherwise you'd need to do a bit of grinding. If you get hit with the "exceeds your current mastery level" that means you need to level up your enhancement level.

You need to be rank 4 with the vendor to earn enhancement level 2. So if you're still not there, a few runs on the Nether should do the trick.

Step 2: Find something the Hive have concealed somewhere in Sorrow's Harbor

For this step, head over to the K1 Revelation Lost Sector via the Sorrow's Harbor landing zone.

Once inside, you'll see a small Taken blight and another set of one plate and rune. Follow the same process as before. This time you'll need to walk backward while facing the rune.

Time to follow the rune's instructions

After this, the Lost Sector will be filled with Taken, leading to a Taken ogre at the end. Take them down and collect your second Taken Osseus Fragment.

Step 3: Find the Taken Osseous Fragment the hive have concealed somewhere in the Forgotten Shore

Now, travel over to the Cosmodrome. More specifically, the Veles Labyrinth lost sector.

The process will be the same. Explore the maze-like section until you find the first set of plates and a rune.

Follow its instructions as you've been doing. In this case, you'll move forward. Then, you'll spawn on a second set, and move left while facing the rune.

Finally, move forward toward the final plate and rune to trigger the attack by the Taken. The hardest part is navigating the lost sector itself, but most pathways will be closed down by Taken energy so just clean house to collect another Taken Osseus Fragment.

Step 4: Receive additional data from Sloane

With the fragments you've collected head back to the Shaping Slab at Eris' apartment and talk to Sloane. Simple enough.

Step 5: Complete three Legendary quests

This step is a bit grindy, as it requires you to tackle three separate quests in order to proceed. These are:

  • Curse of Endurance
  • Curse of Urgency
  • Curse of Revenge

These can be completed in any order you wish. We'll have dedicated guides to each to help you out as well.

Step 6: Find more Taken Osseus Fragments in The Nether

Another relatively grindy step. Depending on where you spawn, finding the new fragments will be different from you.

Since this is also a big step to crack down, we'll be dedicating a separate guide to help you out.

Step 7: Complete the Derealize exotic mission

Once you complete the first six steps of the quest you'll finally unlock the Derealize exotic mission.

As you can imagine, it's a very fun and relatively long quest, so we'll be breaking down what you need to do to complete it.

And that's that, once you've completed all those steps. The Barrow-Dyad SMG will finally be yours.
