Vince Zampela, the head of Respawn Entertainment who is also overseeing the Battlefield franchise, had an exclusive interview with IGN to reveal the first details of the next game.

He revealed the following four major details for the next shooter title, with some of them heavily rumored before:

  • The title will return to the franchise's roots, taking inspiration from Battlefield 3 and 4, and feature a modern setting.
  • The game will feature 64-player maps.
  • Specialists are out, class system is back.
  • The title entered full production earlier this year and it's currently targeting a 2025 release.

Here is what the head of the franchise had to say when talking about the decision to go back to a modern setting:

I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it's that Battlefield 3... Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we'll see where it goes from there. But I think for me, it's that peak of Battlefield-ness is in that Battlefield 3 and 4 days. So I think it's nostalgic for players, for me, for the teams even. Those are kind of the heyday...although I would say 1942 also.

Although Battlefield 2042 also presented a modern setting, the game was criticized for failing to live up to the expectations and trying to copy features from other franchises unsuccessfully.

IGN also revealed the first official concept art for the game, which you can see at the start of the article. It's hard to get anything out of this image, but the place under attack looks like a town from a European city.
