Throughout the year, there are regional tournaments and leagues that can help determine the best teams from specific countries or regions, but those aren't international competitions. The international competitions are where the glory is.
There are Majors, Ubisoft-organized international tournaments that are prestigious... But winning a Major doesn't automatically make a team the world champion.
This argument comes up time and time again. It was recently a hot topic on Twitter thanks to the Six Invitational starting back up. Ubisoft has changed its position on what defines a Rainbow Six Siege world champion over the years, which has made it somewhat confusing for the community.
How do you become the world champion in Rainbow Six Siege?
There's only one way to become a world champion in Rainbow Six Siege: win the Six Invitational, held in February every year as the last — and largest — event in the Global Circuit.
Before the Six Invitational was announced, winners of Pro League Finals tournaments were given the "world champion" distinction. That distinction was taken away by Ubisoft, and rightfully so: only two of the current four current global regions participated in the early Pro League Finals. By definition, they cannot be world champions: they didn't play against LATAM or APAC.
The Six Invitational hammer-lifter is the world champion. That's it, end of story. This is the goal that all the teams work towards throughout the year: lifting the hammer is the highest honor any team can have. Only three of the four regions have done it.
Spacestation and Continuum have won a hammer for NA. PENTA Sports and G2, which were the same roster, are the only team to win back-to-back hammers. Ninjas in Pyjamas won LATAM's only hammer at the previous iteration of the tournament in 2021.
What team will be the world champions in 2021?
Who will lift the hammer and become world champions this year? It's starting to look like Team Liquid. The all-Brazilian roster is bulldozing the competition and has been surgical in the server so far. DWG KIA is an APAC roster that stands a chance, and all-Russian Team Empire and NA's Soniqs are surging right now, but the favorite by far and away is Team Liquid.
